i've finally managed to get climm working on my palm (hp) pre.
using the precompiled binaries from the optware packages was the first step, but sadly some libs were missing (a missing dependency was the problem)
installing libtasn1 by hand solved it.

now we've a working (test based ) icq instant messanger wo patching webos like hell :)





to get a clue what other packages are available on optware (iirc these things were originally compiled for the nslu2) take a look in the list

the long awaited webos 2..0 update showed up for developers some time ago, now more and more details about the new device pre2 pop up:

basically identical design to the former palm pre plus, but a 1 ghz processor inside and a better (glas) touchscreen. this 1 ghz is (as you might have read in one of my prior postings) the speed of an regular overclocked pre (and a speed comparision on precentral showd no differences bet. a overclocked pre and a pre2).


now whats really really thrilling is webos 2.0: a lot of improvements have been done to the gui, like stacks, but also a set of new functions see the light of the day:
- flashplayer in browser \o/
- serial bluetooth connections (i.e. for bt keyboards)
- add your own search engines for universal search
- edit the text assistant
- vpn included
- IM clients yahhoo and fb
- a lot more


so, i'm prepared with my overclocked "old" pre, those fruit guys that were already jealous now ralph. this device is 10000% more usable than a humanoid roboter telephone.

Jetzt wirds spannend: dtzWill hat X auf webos portiert. was das bedeutet?
X ist die verbindung zwischen Grafikausgabe und programm. bisher hat webos alle bilder direkt aus dem Speicher auf den Bildschirm geschoben (ähnlich wie beim framebufferdevice glaube ich), ohne dass eine standardisierte schnittstelle vorhanden war. alle gängigen linux anwendungen verwenden jedoch die X architektur.

mit der portiertung ist es jetzt möglich _alle_ linux anwendungen laufen zu lassen.




da webos ziemlich verwinkelt ist und nicht über ein großes repository verfügt transplantieren findige köpfe den kernel ganz einfach in eine andere umgebung. dieses nennt sich "ändern der root umgebung" oder chroot. man installiert iein virtuelles dateisystem mit fix und fertig installiertem debian linux und wechselt in diese umgebung. hier kann man alles mögliche nachinstallieren. noch laufende prozesse werden davon nicht beinträchtigt.
jetzt wird die sache besonders spannend: es existiert ein tool namens "synergy". dieses ist dafür geschaffen worden mit einer maus und einer tastatur 2 rechner zu bedienen, die über ein netzwerk verbunden sind (sofern darauf X, Win oder macos läuft) ... X läuft auf dem Palm pre und auf dem PC .... also kann ich mein Händie vom PC aus bedienen :O

das klingt alles sehr abgedreht, aber es klappt tatsächlich. (mit einer klitzekleinen einschränkung: webos 1.4.5 hat ein neues sicherheits konzept welches von sich aus einen kleinen sandkasten um die programme baut. X11 benötigt ein update. der autor ist bemüht dieses zeitnah zu liefern )

just for the records: uNiXpSyChO relesed an 1.2 ghz kernel for webos named blackbird. i realy dont wanna hurt my pre, so i wont install. but its really amazing how far you van overdrive your pre processor. the processor originally was thought for to be used at 600 mhz, palm decided to take it down to 500 mhz for power consumption and lifetime reasons. well, seemes this is an open end story :-D

- new tool for palms webos popped out of nowhere: it automatically switches applications or modes on and off depending on where you are or what you are doing. socalled trigger events which can be time, location or charging based and those will automatical change wallpapers, sound status, messenger status, etc.

a really great thing if you ask me: i can turn on wifi when im in my shop or at home, based on the gps information, i can go online with my instant messanger if the device is charging, otherwise power consumption is too high. just great. i think i hav4e 1000000 more ideas of what my phone should do in a certain situation ...
